Colares UFO flap

Record summary

Residents of Colares and neighboring communities in northern Brazil reported recurring luminous objects, beams and alleged attacks during a prolonged 1977–78 flap. Stories included injuries, panic, local medical treatment and observations by many residents. The Brazilian Air Force conducted Operação Prato, collecting interviews, sketches and other material before the investigation was closed. Later interpretations range from misidentified aircraft and folklore amplification to extraordinary craft and weapons claims. The episode is notable because it generated an identifiable military file, not because those interpretations have been established.
