Record summary
Some Latter-day Saint traditions identify Polynesian peoples with descendants of Book of Mormon figures, particularly through the speculative Hagoth migration theory. Missionary and church publications circulated such claims in the Pacific, while historians, archaeologists and many Polynesian scholars disputed or qualified them. This is a useful lead for studying apocryphal migration, sacred genealogy and promised-land narratives. Researchers should separate official doctrine, local devotional interpretation, nineteenth-century missionary teaching and genetic or archaeological claims, which do not carry equivalent evidentiary status.
