Record summary
H. D. Sankalia and colleagues excavated Nevasa in the mid-1950s, establishing a long sequence from prehistoric and Chalcolithic occupations through later historic periods. Nevasa became especially important for the Jorwe cultural horizon, settlement organization, ceramics, subsistence and regional chronology in the Deccan. The site supports comparison between village economies and later urban or state systems, but its interpretation has changed as radiocarbon methods, ceramic typologies and regional surveys developed. Questions remain about the causes of settlement abandonment, climate stress, mobility and the degree of cultural continuity between successive occupations.
