Record summary
A wooden cross was erected on Observation Hill after the deaths of Robert Falcon Scott and four companions during the Terra Nova Expedition. Its inscription and placement turned an Antarctic expedition site into a Christian memorial landscape, later surrounded by stories of sacrifice, presence and uncanny isolation. The lead matters for comparing religious interpretation of polar environments with accounts of intermediary beings, but it is an artefact and commemorative episode, not evidence of an apparition. The cross’s provenance, inscription and later conservation are readily verifiable through expedition records and heritage documentation.
