Record summary
Ancient DNA from four individuals buried at Shum Laka provided evidence about population history in central-western Africa. The study is important because it challenged simplified assumptions that present-day language communities directly preserve the ancestry of every earlier archaeological population in the region. The individuals showed ancestry profiles distinct from many later populations, but the sample is small and cannot represent all ancient Cameroon. Genetic continuity, language transmission and archaeological identity must therefore be analyzed separately rather than collapsed into one migration story.
