Record summary
Excavations at Inamgaon began in the late 1960s and later became one of the best-known Chalcolithic village sequences in peninsular India. The site is relevant to research on domestic architecture, agriculture, animal management, craft specialization and burial practices, including unusual mortuary contexts that have generated competing interpretations. Its importance for this period lies partly in the way later seasons transformed the initial evidence into a broader model of Deccan social organization. Early excavation claims should be checked against the complete project reports, later radiocarbon work and revised interpretations of diet and health.
