Record summary
Several carved soapstone birds from Great Zimbabwe were removed from the site during the late nineteenth century and entered colonial and private collections. The sculptures, probably associated with elite or ritual contexts, later became national symbols of Zimbabwe. Their dispersal provides a concrete lead for studying archaeological collecting, provenance, museum histories, and the suppression of African authorship in early interpretations. Individual birds have different documentation histories, so research should distinguish documented removals from later claims and avoid treating all surviving examples as a single find.
