The Mothman reports and Point Pleasant legend

Record summary

The Mothman episode began with reported encounters near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1966, followed by press coverage, UFO claims, and later association with the Silver Bridge collapse of December 1967. John Keel’s The Mothman Prophecies helped establish the enduring narrative, while later researchers have examined social contagion, misidentification, and folklore formation. This lead permits comparison of alleged entity sightings, disaster symbolism, media amplification, and retrospective pattern-making. The reports and publications are verifiable, but a creature or predictive connection is not established.
