Record summary
Nan Madol is a monumental complex of artificial islets, canals and basalt architecture traditionally associated with the Saudeleur polity. Archaeological and conservation work before 2009 documented construction, settlement, ritual associations and environmental deterioration. The site matters for comparing labor organization, island engineering and political centralization in Oceania. Its traditional histories are important sources for local interpretation, but they are not straightforward construction records. Chronology, function and the degree of centralized control remain subjects of scholarly discussion.
