Record summary
Teodoro Sampaio’s work on Tupi language, geography, and cultural history belongs mainly to the turn of the twentieth century but helps trace the scholarly background for Brazilian fire and sky traditions recorded in the nineteenth century. It is particularly relevant to interpreting names and Indigenous-language etymologies attached to figures such as Boitatá and Mãe-do-Ouro. The lead should be used only when a researcher follows its citations backward into nineteenth-century Brazilian newspapers, literary works, and ethnographic reports. It is not itself a nineteenth-century folklore field report.
