Record summary
William and Horatio Eddy’s séances at Chittenden, Vermont, drew Helena Blavatsky and journalist Henry Olcott, who described apparitions, spirit forms, and physical manifestations. The episode became important in early Theosophical publicity and in arguments about whether séance phenomena were spiritual, magical, or theatrical. Later investigators and witnesses proposed concealed performers, trapdoors, darkness, and other ordinary mechanisms, while believers defended selected manifestations. Contemporary newspaper coverage, Olcott’s People from the Other World, and later critiques allow comparison of observation and narrative construction.
