Record summary
French ethnographers Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen described Dogon cosmological traditions involving Sirius and the mythical Nommo; later writers presented these accounts as evidence that the Dogon possessed advanced astronomical knowledge. Scholars including Walter van Beek challenged the interpretation, arguing that informant interaction, translation, selective reporting, and later diffusion may have shaped the published account. This is important for UAP research because it illustrates how indigenous cosmology can be recast as extraterrestrial contact. It is not evidence that the Dogon encountered visitors from space.
