Record summary
Archaeological and historical surveys of the abandoned whaling stations at Deception Island examined buildings, tanks, boats, machinery and other remains from twentieth-century Antarctic industry. Although not ancient, the site is relevant to maritime archaeology because volcanic eruptions, ice and isolation create unusual preservation and abandonment conditions. It provides a comparison for distinguishing rapid disaster abandonment from planned industrial closure. Dates and condition of individual structures vary, and later Antarctic heritage programs may have superseded early survey descriptions.
