Record summary
During and after the 1955–1956 expedition, Thor Heyerdahl and collaborators investigated how Rapa Nui communities might have quarried, moved, and erected moai. The demonstrations were intended to show that relatively simple technologies could account for monumental construction, challenging assumptions that outside engineers were necessary. They matter because modern experiments can test mechanical feasibility without proving a particular ancient procedure. Later researchers proposed several transport models, including upright movement, and debate continues over labor organization, routes, and landscape evidence.
