Record summary
José Maria de Santo Agostinho, remembered as a wandering monk and healer, became a focal point for a messianic tradition that preceded the Contestado conflict. Late nineteenth-century social and devotional conditions, including healing reports and expectations of sacred leadership, formed part of the movement’s background before the better-documented 1912–1916 war. This lead allows comparison of charismatic healing, oral prophecy and later historical memory. Because the surviving record is uneven and many narratives were written after the conflict, each attributed saying or cure requires source criticism.
