Record summary
A chance discovery in 1966 brought Ban Chiang’s painted pottery and burial deposits to archaeological attention, followed by investigations and excavations during the late 1960s. The site became famous for claims that bronze technology and complex settlement appeared in Southeast Asia much earlier than previously believed. Later radiocarbon work substantially revised the earliest chronology and separated Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age phases. Ban Chiang is therefore a strong comparison case for a genuine site whose public reputation was shaped by disputed early dating and later reassessment.
