Record summary
Glozel was the site of a large and contentious assemblage of tablets, stones, ceramics and other objects reported by the Fradin family in the 1920s. Some objects bore signs that supporters linked to ancient writing, while critics argued that the collection included modern fabrications or misunderstood material. Courts, scholarly commissions and later scientific tests failed to produce a consensus covering the entire assemblage. Glozel matters as a case study in authentication, amateur excavation, competing expert communities and the history of European archaeological controversy. It should be approached as a disputed corpus, not an established discovery.
