Record summary
Fridtjof Nansen’s Fram expedition intentionally froze a vessel into Arctic sea ice to drift toward the North Pole, creating extensive records of confinement, darkness, sensory monotony, sleep disruption and unusual environmental perception. The journals and later narrative are valuable for comparing altered-state reports produced under prolonged isolation without presuming paranormal causes. Nansen’s separate ski journey with Hjalmar Johansen adds another extreme-survival context. Researchers should distinguish contemporaneous diary entries from polished retrospective expedition literature and later psychological interpretations.
