Record summary
Igbo-Ukwu excavations revealed elaborately cast copper-alloy vessels, beads, regalia, and ritual deposits dating broadly to the ninth century CE. Thurstan Shaw’s work demonstrated a technically sophisticated precolonial metalworking tradition and stimulated debate about craft specialization, long-distance exchange, and political organization. The assemblages are useful for comparing metallurgy and elite display across West Africa. Uncertainty concerns the function of individual deposits, social interpretations, and how much broader regional history can safely be reconstructed from a small number of contexts.
