Record summary
Monte Verde is a late-Pleistocene archaeological site investigated intensively by Tom Dillehay and colleagues from the 1970s onward. Reports described preserved wooden structures, lithic artifacts, plant remains, and other evidence suggesting human presence earlier than the conventional Clovis model allowed. The site became central to debates about migration routes, chronology, and preservation in the Americas, especially after late-1980s publications and later reassessments. Its importance is substantial, but dating, stratigraphic integrity, and the interpretation of some materials have remained subjects of specialist discussion.
