Record summary

What happened Crews aboard two U.S. B-29 bombers reported orange globe-like lights during separate combat missions. Descriptions included pacing or approaching the aircraft, leading intelligence personnel to consider enemy weapons as well as unusual phenomena. The reports occurred in a dense environment of aircraft, flak, fires and stress. Evidence Four military aircrew on two bombers reported similar orange lights in operational records. Explanations considered Enemy aircraft, flak, illumination rounds, St Elmo’s fire or astronomical lights distorted by cockpit glazing are alternatives. What remains uncertain Combat conditions and incomplete public records prevent reliable matching of the two observations. Primary source Wonsan–Sunchon bomber light encounters — Wikipedia
