Record summary
What happened Students and some staff at Westall High School and Westall State School reported one or more silvery disc- or saucer-like objects moving over the area during the morning. Witnesses described the principal object descending near open ground before climbing away, in some accounts accompanied or pursued by aircraft. The large witness pool makes the event socially well attested, but descriptions were not collected under one controlled protocol and no accepted official case file or clear original photograph settles what was seen. A wind-borne government radiation-sampling balloon and associated recovery aircraft have been proposed as a coherent conventional explanation, though not all witnesses accept it. Evidence Numerous student and staff recollections, contemporary press material, later interviews and alleged but unverified photographs or film stories. Explanations considered A HIBAL high-altitude balloon and recovery operation, conventional aircraft, or memory and rumor amplification are leading proposals. What remains uncertain Most detailed interviews were conducted decades later. A large number of witnesses can establish that an unusual shared episode occurred without establishing the object's identity or exact behavior.
