Record summary

What happened Night-vision imagery recorded from USS Russell showed blinking triangular or pyramid-like lights. The footage was widely described as showing triangular craft, but optical analysis indicates that out-of-focus point sources can take the triangular shape of the night-vision system's aperture, a bokeh effect. Regular blinking is also consistent with aircraft navigation lights. Official acknowledgment that Navy personnel recorded the video establishes provenance, not the physical shape of the sources. Evidence Navy-recorded night-vision footage, ship logs and briefings concerning a broader period of small-object encounters. Explanations considered Out-of-focus aircraft lights producing triangular aperture bokeh are a strong explanation for the imagery. Stars or other distant point lights could create similar shapes. What remains uncertain The clip does not resolve the underlying source and contains few reliable distance cues. It cannot establish a triangular solid object from image outline alone.
