Record summary

What happened Captain Emil Smith, co-pilot Ralph Stephens and flight attendant Marty Morrow reported nine objects pacing or passing their DC-3. Smith flashed the landing lights because he initially thought they were aircraft. The crew described broad, flat objects with rough-looking tops and linked the report to the wave following Kenneth Arnold. Evidence Three airline crew members gave prompt press and investigator accounts. Explanations considered Distant aircraft, reflections and astronomical objects have been proposed, but the crew described relative motion against terrain and the aircraft. What remains uncertain No photograph, radar record or precise angular measurements survive, and publicity around Arnold may have shaped descriptive language.
