Record summary

What happened Farmer Renato Nicolaï reported hearing a whistling sound and seeing a small lead-colored object descend, remain briefly near his property and depart rapidly. A circular trace was found on the ground. French gendarmerie and GEPAN investigators collected soil and plant samples; laboratory work reported mechanical pressure, heating or stress effects and changes in vegetation near the trace. GEPAN left the case unexplained, but later critics argued that the mark resembled a vehicle-tire track and that plant differences could result from ordinary environmental or sampling variation. Evidence A prompt police report, site photographs and measurements, soil and vegetation samples, and formal French government analysis. Explanations considered A vehicle or construction-equipment mark, an undocumented hoax, and ordinary plant stress are the leading alternatives. The observed aerial object could have been unrelated to the ground trace. What remains uncertain Nicolaï was the sole visual witness. Laboratory differences do not uniquely identify an aerospace vehicle, and the site was not isolated from normal property activity.
