Record summary
What happened Socorro police officer Lonnie Zamora broke off a traffic pursuit after hearing a roar and seeing a flame descend beyond a ridge. At close range he reported a white oval or egg-shaped object on legs and two small figures nearby. As he approached, the figures disappeared from view, the object rose with a loud roar and flame, then departed silently at low altitude. Other people reported a sound or moving light around the same time, and investigators documented impressions and burned vegetation at the site. Project Blue Book classified the case as unidentified; later hoax, experimental-aircraft and lunar-lander-test explanations have been argued but not demonstrated with a matching vehicle and flight record. Evidence A prompt report from a police officer, site photographs and measurements, landing-like impressions, scorched vegetation, limited supporting observations and extensive official investigation. Explanations considered A student hoax, a hot-air balloon, helicopter or classified test vehicle have been proposed. The hoax theory lacks a fully documented mechanism; an experimental craft would need to explain the reported performance and absence of an identified program. What remains uncertain Zamora was the only close observer. Site traces establish disturbance but not what caused it, and the originally reported insignia was intentionally obscured in public accounts.
