Record summary

What happened U.S. Air Force security personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge reported lights in Rendlesham Forest during several nights. On the first night, Jim Penniston and John Burroughs described approaching a bright object or lights among the trees; Penniston's later claims of touching a structured craft and receiving binary information are more elaborate than his earliest record. On a later night, deputy base commander Charles Halt led a team into the forest, recorded observations on audio tape and wrote a memorandum describing unusual lights, ground impressions and elevated radiation readings. Skeptical reconstructions combine a bright meteor, the Orford Ness lighthouse, stars and misinterpreted lights; witnesses dispute that these account for close observations. Evidence Multiple military witnesses, Halt's contemporaneous memorandum and field recording, site measurements and later interviews. Explanations considered Meteor, lighthouse flashes, stars, ordinary vehicles and expectation effects are the principal conventional account. Radiation readings were small and taken with equipment not optimized for environmental surveying. What remains uncertain The case contains multiple nights and evolving personal narratives. Later hypnosis, binary-code and cover-up claims should not be projected backward into the earliest documents.
