Record summary

What happened Newspapers across California and the Midwest printed hundreds of reports of lights and supposed airships with propellers, wings, cabins and human crews. Some stories described landings and conversations with inventors. The wave preceded practical powered flight and mixed sincere light observations with satire, publicity and outright newspaper invention. Evidence A large, geographically distributed newspaper archive preserves the reports and their changing motifs. Explanations considered Stars and planets, balloons, misperception, journalism hoaxes and cultural expectation around imminent powered flight explain much of the wave. What remains uncertain Newspaper repetition and syndication make report counts look more independent than they were, and few claims have primary witness documentation.
