Record summary

What happened Missile-security teams around Minot reported unusual lights near launch facilities while a B-52 returning to base obtained airborne radar returns and crew members saw a bright object. The aircraft's radar data and ground observations were investigated by Project Blue Book, which attributed much of the visual reporting to stars, particularly Sirius, and considered radar propagation or ordinary traffic. Case researchers argue that the sequence contains closer observations and radar behavior not adequately explained by stars. As with RB-47, the evidential question is whether the many observations were one object or several conventional stimuli experienced during a tense operational period. Evidence Military ground and aircrew statements, B-52 radar photographs or plots described in the case file, flight information and Blue Book documentation. Explanations considered Bright stars, aircraft, radar propagation and perceptual effects are the principal official explanations. Correlation between each radar return and each visual report remains contested. What remains uncertain The event sequence is complex and reconstructed from records with differing times. No surviving high-resolution sensor package establishes shape, range and motion for a single target.
