Record summary

What happened Harold Dahl said that while aboard a patrol boat near Maury Island he saw six doughnut-shaped objects, one of which released hot metallic debris that damaged the boat and injured a dog. Dahl and his employer Fred Crisman later supplied alleged fragments and described a threatening visit by a dark-suited stranger. Army Air Forces investigators Captain William Davidson and Lieutenant Frank Brown interviewed the men; both officers died when their B-25 crashed while returning to California. The crash was documented, but its association with the sighting became part of the story rather than evidence that the UFO claim was true. Dahl later told investigators the episode was a hoax, although he subsequently complicated that admission. Evidence Witness statements, surviving investigative correspondence, alleged slag-like material, and records of the officers' fatal aircraft accident. The material was not shown to be exotic. Explanations considered Military and later historical assessments generally treat the case as a hoax or publicity scheme. The contradictory statements, ordinary material and changing narrative substantially reduce evidential weight. What remains uncertain The principal claimants were inconsistent, and the emotionally powerful plane crash was not evidence about what they saw. The case is important to UFO culture and “men in black” lore, but weak as an encounter record.
