Record summary
What happened Great Falls baseball manager Nicholas Mariana filmed two bright objects crossing the daytime sky above the local ballpark. The short 16 mm sequence became one of the earliest widely studied motion pictures in UFO history. Air Force analysts first identified reflections from two nearby F-94 jets, then reconsidered and later returned to an aircraft explanation. Mariana maintained that the objects were discs and that the returned film was missing its clearest opening frames, a claim the Air Force disputed. Later photoanalysts reached different conclusions because the film contains bright, poorly resolved images without reliable distance or size information. Evidence Surviving 16 mm film, witness testimony, identified aircraft operating in the region and several generations of photographic analysis. Explanations considered Sunlight glinting from jet aircraft is the principal conventional explanation. Critics question whether the aircraft geometry and brightness match the footage; image resolution is insufficient to settle shape. What remains uncertain The film records light sources but not their distance. Claims about missing frames are not independently demonstrable from the surviving material.
