Record summary
What happened Kentucky Air National Guard Captain Thomas Mantell and other P-51 pilots were asked to investigate a large bright object reported from Fort Knox. Mantell climbed after it while the other pilots discontinued, and radio traffic indicated he intended to continue higher. His aircraft later broke up and crashed; the evidence is consistent with loss of consciousness from oxygen deprivation followed by an uncontrolled high-speed descent. The observed target was initially unresolved, but later Air Force analysis linked it to a large Skyhook research balloon in the region. The fatal accident made this one of the formative early UFO cases, although the crash itself does not demonstrate unusual behavior by the target. Evidence Multiple ground observations, military radio and accident records, wreckage analysis, and balloon-launch reconstruction. There is no evidence that Mantell's aircraft was attacked. Explanations considered A Skyhook balloon viewed under difficult lighting is the leading identification. Venus was considered in early discussion but does not account well for all reported directions. Hypoxia explains Mantell's loss of control. What remains uncertain Witness descriptions differed, the target's distance was unknown, and popular retellings added claims about strange wreckage that the accident investigation did not support.
