Record summary
What happened Groups of professors and other residents around Lubbock reported repeated formations of bluish-green lights crossing the night sky, often in V or arc patterns. Student Carl Hart Jr. photographed one formation, while other reports involved lights seen from different locations and, in some retellings, a separate radar detection. Project Blue Book staff considered whether birds illuminated by new mercury-vapor streetlights could explain at least part of the sightings. Captain Edward Ruppelt later said a confidential source had offered a conventional explanation, but he did not publish enough information to evaluate it. The label therefore covers several observations that may not have shared one cause. Evidence Multiple witnesses over several nights, five published photographs and Air Force interviews. The photographs do not supply distance or scale. Explanations considered Night-flying birds reflecting city lights, meteors and aircraft formations have been proposed. The repeated geometric appearance may reflect flocking birds, while some observers reported speed or brightness they considered inconsistent with that explanation. What remains uncertain The case aggregates events with different observers, dates and evidential quality. Hart's photographs should not automatically be treated as images of everything the professors described.
