Record summary

What happened Drivers around Levelland independently called police to report bright objects or lights near roads, often accompanied by engines losing power and headlights dimming. In several accounts the vehicles restarted after the light departed. Police officers also saw unusual lights, but they did not document a close object or simultaneous instrument readings. Project Blue Book attributed the episode to severe electrical weather and ball lightning, while noting that thunderstorms were in the broader region. Critics argue that the number and geographic spread of reports make a single weather event inadequate; skeptics note that publicity, wet ignition systems and ordinary celestial or vehicle lights could create a cascade of reports. Evidence Numerous witness calls recorded by local law enforcement, some police observations and reports of temporary vehicle failures. No affected vehicle was shown to contain unusual damage or residual electromagnetic effects. Explanations considered Electrical storms, ball lightning, wet ignition systems, meteors and report contagion are the main conventional proposals. What remains uncertain The reports differed in object description and were not all simultaneous. Vehicle malfunctions were reported retrospectively and not instrumented.
