Record summary

What happened Night guard Yalçın Yalman filmed distant luminous shapes over the Sea of Marmara on numerous nights. Zoomed frames were interpreted as a structured craft with occupants. Critics compared the image to the illuminated bridge or superstructure of a cruise ship distorted by extreme zoom and atmospheric conditions. Evidence Many hours of video, known shoreline viewpoint and repeat observations form the evidence. Explanations considered Distant ship lights and superstructure, camera zoom, defocus and mirage effects are leading explanations. What remains uncertain The footage lacks independent range and often records only a small bright region against darkness; alleged occupants are image interpretation.
