Record summary

What happened Private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine bright objects moving in a chain near Mount Rainier while he was flying from Chehalis to Yakima. He described their motion as irregular and compared it to saucers skipping across water; newspapers converted that motion analogy into the enduring label “flying saucer.” Arnold attempted to time the objects against known landmarks and derived a speed far beyond contemporary aircraft, but that estimate depended on uncertain distance and size. The report became nationally influential because Arnold was identifiable, aviation-experienced and interviewed immediately, not because physical evidence was recovered. Evidence Arnold's signed and published accounts, contemporary press interviews, a route-and-landmark reconstruction, and later Air Force discussion. No photograph, radar record or recovered material is known. Explanations considered Proposals include misidentified aircraft, birds, meteors, atmospheric mirage and errors in estimating distance, size and speed. No single explanation has achieved universal acceptance; the speed calculation is the case's weakest quantitative element. What remains uncertain The event rests mainly on one observer's visual report. Later retellings sometimes replace Arnold's varied descriptions with a simple saucer shape that he did not consistently claim.
