Record summary
What happened A brilliant fireball crossed parts of Canada and the northeastern United States, producing many reports and apparent sonic effects. Near Kecksburg, some residents believed it descended into woodland; firefighters, police and military personnel searched the area. Later witnesses described an acorn- or bell-shaped object with markings and claimed it was removed by the military, but those detailed recovery stories were not established in contemporary records. Astronomers generally identify the widely seen object as a meteor. The reentry of the Soviet probe Kosmos 96 was once proposed, but orbital timing analyses do not place it over Pennsylvania at the required time. Evidence A well-documented regional fireball, contemporary emergency response, press coverage and later witness accounts of military activity. No authenticated recovered object or material is public. Explanations considered A meteor is the strongest explanation for the sky event. The alleged woodland object may reflect misinterpretation, rumor or an unrelated military search; Kosmos 96 is not a good timing match. What remains uncertain The regional fireball and later acorn-recovery narrative are related by location and timing but are not independently proven to describe one object. The most dramatic retrieval claims emerged later. Primary source Kecksburg UFO incident — Wikipedia
