Record summary
What happened Cargo-aircraft crews reported unusual lights near the Kaikoura coast, with some targets also appearing on Wellington air-traffic radar. A television news crew then joined a flight and filmed bright lights while crew and controllers discussed radar contacts. The combination of film, several observers and radar made the case internationally prominent. New Zealand authorities and skeptical investigators proposed squid-fishing boats, Venus, other aircraft and radar ducting or anomalous propagation; they argued that different stimuli were grouped together. Witnesses maintained that at least some lights moved or paced the aircraft in ways those explanations did not capture. Evidence Color film, aircrew and journalist testimony, radio recordings, air-traffic radar reports and meteorological analysis. Explanations considered Fishing-boat lights reflected from cloud, Venus and other stars, conventional aircraft and anomalous radar propagation are the main proposals. No one explanation necessarily covers both nights and every target. What remains uncertain The film records luminous points without reliable range. Radar returns were intermittent and may not correspond to the photographed lights. Primary source Kaikoura lights — Wikipedia
