Record summary
What happened Thousands of residents reported large V- or boomerang-shaped arrays of lights moving slowly and sometimes hovering. Groups of private pilots later admitted flying small aircraft in formation with lights, apparently accounting for prominent nights. Other reports occurred when the formation was not documented. Evidence Mass witnesses, photographs or video, investigator logs and identified formation flights document the wave. Explanations considered Light aircraft flying in formation, conventional traffic and stars account for much of the display; publicity encouraged further reports. What remains uncertain A multi-year wave cannot be treated as one craft, and witness impressions of a dark solid body may result from connecting separate lights.
