Record summary

What happened Play stopped during a Fiorentina match as spectators and players watched pale objects or lights overhead. Witnesses variously described cigars, eggs and a formation. White filamentous material, later called ‘angel hair,’ was reported across Florence and sampled briefly before dissolving. Evidence Thousands were present, contemporary newspapers covered the event, and samples of fibrous material were examined but not preserved. Explanations considered Migrating spiders releasing silk, windborne chaff or fibres, and sunlight on a high-altitude formation are leading explanations; the aerial objects and fibres may have had different causes. What remains uncertain Mass attendance does not equal a uniform account, and no enduring sample or calibrated image establishes the objects.
