Record summary

What happened Residents of Colares and nearby communities reported repeated luminous objects that approached houses or people, sometimes projecting narrow beams. Local medical staff described patients with burns, weakness or small marks popularly attributed to the lights. The Brazilian Air Force opened Operation Saucer, conducting interviews, observations and photography; declassified files confirm an official investigation and extensive reporting. They do not establish that every injury and light shared one cause. Later accounts by operation commander Uyrangê Hollanda expanded the story, while conventional proposals include misidentified celestial objects, aircraft, satellites, insects, social contagion and unrelated medical conditions. Evidence Large numbers of civilian reports, medical testimony, Brazilian Air Force documents, sketches and photographs of lights, and later testimony from investigators. Explanations considered Astronomical objects, satellites, aircraft, insects and mass expectation may explain portions of the wave. The alleged beam injuries require case-by-case medical review rather than automatic attribution to the lights. What remains uncertain “Colares” combines many events over months and a broad area. Most photographs show lights without range or structure, and later sensational accounts should be separated from the contemporaneous files.
