Record summary

What happened Aurigny pilot Ray Bowyer and passengers saw a brilliant yellow object west of Alderney; Bowyer later reported a second object and estimated very large size. A pilot on another flight reported a light from a different direction. Radar information was limited. Evidence Two pilots on separate aircraft, passengers and a prompt Civil Aviation Authority report provide multiple observations. Explanations considered Sunlight reflected from unusual cloud layers, atmospheric mirage and distant aircraft or ships are alternatives. What remains uncertain Size estimates depend on assumed distance, and the two pilots may not have seen the same source. Primary source Alderney airline-pilot sighting — Wikipedia
