The surviving recalled description is unusually thin: an unexplained light was reportedly noticed by a person connected with aviation, but does not securely identify that person as a pilot, air-traffic controller, airport employee, passenger, or nearby civilian. It does not preserve a day, time, weather conditions, direction of view, duration, altitude, colour, apparent size, movement, sound, effect on aircraft operations, or the wording of the original report. Nor does the recalled lead attach a flight log, air-traffic-control record, radar plot, airport occurrence report, newspaper article, witness statement, photograph, or traceable contemporary investigation. Accordingly, this dossier treats the case label as a research problem rather than as confirmation that a discrete anomalous aerial event occurred. The airport setting is important but should not be overread. Ratmalana is an aviation environment in which aircraft navigation lights, landing lights, approach or departure traffic, ground vehicles, runway and apron lighting, rotating or flashing beacons, weather, and distant urban illumination may all be seen by aviation-connected observers. A light seen from an airport is not inherently anomalous, and an observer’s aviation association does not by itself establish specialist expertise in identifying all lights at all ranges. Conversely, a potentially experienced observer might have had a useful contextual reason for finding a light unusual. Because the observer’s position and account are unknown, neither inference can responsibly be made here. The designation may reflect an entry in a later UFO list rather than an independently preserved original case. Case-list transmission can compress a fuller report into a place, year, and label such as “airport observation,” and each retelling can add an implication of official or pilot testimony that the available memory does not support. It is also possible that the label conflates a sighting in the Ratmalana or Colombo area with an airport event, or misdates a report from another year. The recalled lead itself expressly warns that the 1986 placement needs confirmation and that the item might be a later retelling of a civilian sighting near Colombo. That warning is central: geographical proximity, a familiar airport name, and an aviation-flavoured label are insufficient grounds to merge separate reports. The reported phenomenon can presently be normalized only as a light of unknown character. “Light” is a witness-category term, not a physical identification. No reliable recollection establishes whether it was steady, flashing, coloured, white, multicoloured, diffuse, point-like, structured, near, distant, stationary, moving, manoeuvring, or associated with a solid object. No reported sensory effects such as sound, heat, electromagnetic interference, engine trouble, communication disruption, physiological reaction, or damage are retained. No behavioural sequence is retained beyond the minimal possibility that an aviation-connected person noticed it. It would be an error to infer hovering, high speed, impossible acceleration, landing, pursuit, radar correlation, military response, or disruption of airport operations from the generic phrase “unexplained light.” A mundane-explanation review must therefore start with ordinary sources and perceptual limits. An aircraft viewed head-on can appear as a bright apparently stationary point before its lateral motion becomes obvious. Aircraft lights can change apparent intensity or colour through angle, haze, cloud, glare, and atmospheric scattering. A helicopter, distant aircraft, balloon, astronomical body, bright planet, satellite, meteor, rocket-related object, searchlight, advertising light, vehicle, or airport ground light could also produce a brief or ambiguous observation, depending on the unrecorded time and geometry. Misidentification is not demonstrated, however; it is simply more testable than an extraordinary conclusion given the missing primary evidence. A conventional identification would require contemporaneous location, azimuth, elevation, timing, weather, and aviation traffic data, none of which is presently attached to the lead. The term UAP is retained as a neutral filing category for an initially unidentified reported aerial light, not as evidence of non-human technology or paranormal agency. The case currently has very low evidential value because its core claims are uncorroborated, attribution is uncertain, and the chain from observation to modern case label is missing. Its potential value lies in targeted archival recovery. A future researcher should establish whether an original Sri Lankan newspaper item, aviation magazine note, airport incident record, police report, civil-aviation correspondence, or witness interview exists; then preserve the document’s publication date, author or witness attribution, exact location, time, observational wording, and indications of editorial embellishment. Newspaper reporting may itself be secondary and commercially shaped: UFO framing, dramatic headlines, local novelty, and later anthology selection can amplify an ambiguous light while omitting corrective details. Until such work is done, the most defensible record is a provisional 1986 Ratmalana-area light report with uncertain observer role and uncertain transmission. The case should be compared with other airport-light accounts through explicit motifs rather than treated as proof of a shared phenomenon. Useful comparison fields include airport proximity, observer occupational connection, single versus multiple witnesses, visual-only evidence, absence or presence of operational disruption, contemporaneous documentation, later UFO-list inclusion, and plausible light-source environment. Those comparisons can illuminate reporting practices and recurring ambiguity without implying that separate accounts have the same cause. The dossier therefore preserves the lead, its genre, and its uncertainty while avoiding a false narrative of a confirmed aviation encounter.
